Gold Pieces - Phyllis Bentley

Peepo - Allan Ahlberg

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - J K Rowling

Book Case Best Sellers

Uh oh, it's that time of year again, and  the children’s bestsellers since the beginning of term have been dominated by preparation packs for the 11+ exam. The most popular are the Secondary Selection Portfolio papers which have  been selling well in all subjects.

It's great to see the Book Case’s own children's publication Gold Pieces is also high in the best sellers list, and hopefullt set to become a favourite with local children.

Ladybird books have been three for two, and with new titles designed for supporting phonics, as well as the classic fairy tales, this has made them top sellers.

Peepo by Allan Ahlberg is a classic picture book that has sold well this month, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is still selling steadily.

New Local Childrens Book

At the Book Case we are really excited to have been involved in republishing the children’s novel Gold Pieces by respected local author and historian Phyllis Bentley OBE. This historical novel is set on the hills above Halifax, and with its vivid backdrop of the notorious saga of the Cragg Vale coiners, it brings local history to life for a new generation of  young people.

When Kate Claughan, the children's book buyer at the Book Case, read an old copy of Gold Pieces to her son, aged eight, she realised this book would be a huge success with local children.

“My son couldn’t put it down, he was absolutely gripped by the story, and the fact that he could recognise the local landscape and landmarks in the story bought it all to life. He wanted to give it to his friends, and his school wanted to read it in class. It was then that I realised that this was a book that deserved to be reprinted."

Gold Pieces is suitable for children aged 8 to 14 years as either a great book to read aloud, or as a gripping page- turner for independent reading.
