Independent bookshops are something of a dying breed and even the national chain bookshops are finding it difficult to compete with supermarket chains and Amazon so I feel privileged to be the owner of an independent bookshop which is managing to survive in this environment which is due in the main to the constancy and loyalty not only of my staff but of the many customers who continue to support us. Last year was a particularly difficult year for us due in part to poor weather over Christmas and the New Year but also because of the recession which affected the whole of the retail trade. This year is also proving difficult and current reports circulating in the book trade suggest that many independent bookshops will fail before the end of the year. The Book Case will hopefully not be one of those bookshops but with another bookshop opening in Hebden Bridge I urge you all please to continue to give us your support which is so important to our survival and which has placed us at the heart of the local community for more than 25 years.
